Abstract
Winslow, defines public health as “the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health trough the organized effotrs and informed choice of society, organization, public and private, communities and inviduals.” While, the United Nations World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Public health have the aim. The aim is to prevent rather than treat a disease. Public health is to prevent threat from many disease. Such as infectious disease, contamination of food or water supplies. There are two activities, surveilans of cases and promotion of health behaviors. Surveilance cases important to study of the distribution and determinant of disease. And the promotion of health behaviors is used realized to society from not healthy behaviors.
Many programs of public health. First, vaccination to prevent infectious disease. Example of infectious disease are tuberculosis, smallpox, polio and etc. And other, distribution of condoms is important to prevent sexually transmitted disease, such as HIV/AIDS.
Public health have much subfields. Consist of epidemiology, biostatistics, health services, enviromental, social, behavioral, and occuptional health. Epidemiology is very important subfield rather than other subfield. Because, epidemiology the study of the distribution and determinant of health-related states or events in specified popultions and the aplication of this study to control of health problem. Therefore, epidemiology is called “mother of public health science”. And John Snow is father of epidemiology
